Who Are They?
Our scholarship recipients are CSUMB students who are graduates of local high schools and have at least a five year connection to the area. Each must be among the first generation in his or her family to have attended college. Each must also be a legal resident of the United States and nominated by a school counselor or other adult who knows the student well.
The students nominated and selected to apply for a scholarship are screened and interviewed by a selection committee comprised of program mentors. That committee each year selects a cohort of new recipients based upon the funds available for new scholarships.
Over the first eight years of the Program, through gifts of over $1.6 million, 98 students have entered the Program. Sixteen of them left the Program, either voluntarily or through dismissal due to failure to meet program commitments. Of the 52 students eligible to graduate to date, 34 have done so. This is a graduation rate in a four year program more than double the six year CSUMB-wide graduation rate for entering freshman. And of those 34 program graduates, 44.1% graduated with Honors!
